Run Baby Run

This year as I sat down to write down my New Year's Resolutions I tried to think of something that would push me to step out of my comfort zone and try something new. Enter the Spring Fest Fun Run. Being a dancer makes my running experience basically nothing. It is not a form of exercise that I enjoy in any way. I look like a goof, I get tired way too quickly, and I find it very boring. Running the 5k in May seemed like the perfect fit for my goal.

I had big aspirations to start running right away so that I could run it very quickly with ease. When I got back to Provo I remembered it was cold, you can't run outside when it's cold. So when it warmed up I would start. When it quit snowing I remembered that it was dark in the morning, you can't run outside when it's dark. So when mornings were light I would start. When it was light I remembered I needed sleep for finals... needless to say I didn't run. As Memorial Day got closer I debated running the race at all. I figured maybe no one would remember that it was one of my resolutions (total cop-out I know). I'm not sure if my mom remembered or what but she signed me up, with little hesitation from me.

The morning of the race was not what I expected at all. I got up, got ready and realized that I was really nervous. I have no idea why I was so anxious, I knew I could finish. We got to the starting point and soon enough the 5k was underway. My goal was an hour, which basically meant that I could walk at a slow pace. As I walked up the hill with a friend, she made me change my goal to forty minutes. Well, I finished in 37 minutes and ran a lot more of it than I expected. I felt so good when I crossed the finish line. I know that it really isn't a huge deal but for me it was! I ran in a race, me! It felt really good to accomplish a goal and do something I really wasn't sure I could do. Now you may ask, am I converted to running? Nope, not in the slightest. But I think I will try to run it a little faster next year. Stay tuned.
